Discover the Frasassi Caves, a breathtaking natural spectacle in the heart of the Marche region. Stalactites, stalagmites and majestic halls await you on this journey to the center of the Earth.

In the green heart of the Marche region, where the Apennine mountains guard millennial secrets, lies hidden one of Italy's most spectacular natural wonders: the Frasassi Caves. This underground kingdom of stalactites and stalagmites represents a journey through geological time, an experience that leaves breathless anyone fortunate enough to walk through its majestic halls.

Discovered in 1971 by the Marchigian Speleological Group CAI of Ancona, the Frasassi Caves extend for over 35 kilometers of galleries and cavities, of which approximately 1.5 km are open to the public. Located in the territory of the municipality of Genga, in the province of Ancona, these karst caves were formed over approximately 190 million years thanks to the erosive action of water on limestone rock.

The constant temperature of 14°C year-round and 100% humidity create the perfect environment to admire geological formations of rare beauty, transforming every visit into an unforgettable experience that engages all the senses.

The Ancona Abyss: A Natural Cathedral

The tourist route begins with a breathtaking spectacle: the Ancona Abyss, a cavity so imposing it could contain Milan Cathedral. With its 180 meters in length, 120 in width and 200 in height, this hall represents one of the largest underground cavities in Europe.

At the center of the Abyss rises majestically the formation called "The Giants," a group of stalagmites reaching 15 meters in height, created by the slow and patient work of water drops rich in calcium carbonate. The almost sacred silence of this environment is interrupted only by the sound of drops that continue, tirelessly, their millennial work.

The Most Spectacular Concretions

In the Ancona Abyss you can admire some of the most suggestive formations:

  • The Organ Pipes: thin and perfectly aligned stalactites reminiscent of organ pipes
  • The Obelisk: a slender stalagmite rising toward the cavern ceiling
  • The Niagara Falls: limestone formations that imitate a petrified waterfall

The Tourist Route: A Journey Through Magnificent Halls

The guided tour of the Frasassi Caves lasts approximately 75 minutes and winds through various halls, each characterized by unique formations and suggestive names that stimulate visitors' imagination.

Hall 200

After the Ancona Abyss, the route leads to Hall 200, so called because it was discovered in the bicentennial of Napoleon's birth. Here you can admire the "Swords of Damocles," extremely thin stalactites hanging from the ceiling like crystalline blades, and the "Camel and Dromedary," formations that nature has sculpted with incredible precision.

The Bear Hall

The Bear Hall owes its name to a concretion resembling the silhouette of a bear. This cavity is characterized by an exceptional richness of decorations: flows, curtains, drapes and tubes create a fairy-tale environment, while the reflections of artificial lights make the calcium carbonate shine like precious crystals.

The Infinity Hall

The last stop on the tourist route is the Infinity Hall, whose name evokes the sense of bewilderment felt by visitors facing its vastness. Here are the small underground lakes, mirrors of crystalline water that reflect the stalactites creating a doubling effect that amplifies the beauty of the environment.
